Indians Made Effort To Sign Francisco Lindor, Fell Short

Mar 12, 2020 5:22 PM

The Cleveland Indians made a "sincere and earnest effort" to sign Francisco Lindor to a long-term contract before deciding this week to suspend talks, says Chris Antonetti.

The president of baseball operations said the sides worked for months and tried "different and creative concepts" to strike a deal, but ultimately decided not to continue negotiations with Opening Day getting closer.

Lindor will make $17.5 million this year and can become a free agent after the 2021 season.

"I'm really appreciative of the effort Francisco and his representatives and our ownership put into the process of trying to find alignment," Antonetti said.

The Cleveland Indians and Francisco Lindor have suspended negotiations on a long-term contract extension.

The shortstop says he still wants to remain with the Indians over the long-term.

"We had good conversations," Lindor said. "We couldn't come up with an agreement. So we put that aside and let's focus on winning."

Lindor, 26, avoided arbitration this offseason, signing a one-year, $17.5 million deal -- a $7 million bump on what he made in 2019. He won't be a free agent until after the 2021 season.

Cardinals Renew Jack Flaherty's Contract For 2020

Mar 10, 2020 8:47 AM

The St. Louis Cardinals have renewed Jack Flaherty's contract for the 2020 season after the two sides couldn't come to an agreement on a deal.

According to a report, the ace will make $604,500 this season. The Cardinals' policy is to reduce a player's salary by $10,000 if the team has to renew a contract, but they paid Flaherty a $10,000 bonus for finishing fourth in National League Cy Young voting to offset the penalty.

Flaherty, 24, went 11-8 with a 2.75 ERA in 33 starts last season.
